What is a good room-rent limit in group health insurance?
3 min read · HR insurance guide
The room-rent limit is one of the most overlooked terms in a group health insurance policy — and one of the most expensive. It caps how much your insurer will pay per day for a hospital room. If your employee chooses a room above that cap, most insurers apply a proportionate deduction, reducing every associated charge (doctor's fees, nursing, procedures) in the same proportion. A small room-rent cap can therefore silently cut a large claim in half.
What a good limit looks like
A strong group policy has no room-rent capping, or a generous limit such as 1-2% of the sum insured per day for a normal room and 2% for ICU. Weaker policies cap the room at a fixed rupee amount (say Rs 3,000/day) that no longer matches metro hospital rates.
